Volcano Live verdict

Volcano live was 4 days of live volcano reports from Hawaii on the BBC. It was OK with Iain Stuart fielding wild balls from Kate Humble , pre made mini docu films, some technical stuff which i was'nt expecting from the dumbed down BBC. Just a couple of things, why didnt they actually try to get some live material from somewhere as it was happening. Etna,Stromboli may have obliged, even Kilauea when madame pele is feeling courteous. The live bit was inside the camper van. It was good but not actually live volcano stuff- i know there not performing monkeys but some drama, excitement and a little percieved danger would have been good for the viewer. I loved it though and it made my week. Iain knows what he s talking about , Kate represented the public.

Indonesia 8.6 earthquake 11 April 2012

On April 11 2012 ,434km south west of Banda Aceh , an earthquake of 8.6 occured at a depth of 22km. A tsunami warning was issued but as the movement was predominantly horizontal no significant water displacement occured and no tsunamis. Much to the relief of the citizens of the Indian Ocean rim who were just recovering from the boxing day tsunami of 2004. Large earthquakes could disturb the plumbing of volcanoes in the area such as Toba.

Vanuatu earthquake 9th March 2012

Vanuatu lies on the Australian/Pacific plate destructive boundary and has been the location of many earthquakes recently of similar most of which are at depths of 35km. The biggest tsunami so far was 23cm. However being on a destructive margin means that tsunamis are likely.

An earthquake of  7.1 occured in Vanuatu at a depth of 35km. The news reports no Tsunami. Which just shows what journalists know. The earthquake was deep and did not disturb the sea floor therefore no uplift of the water column above and no tsunami. No doubt the media were dissapointed as they love a disaster. There was no chanc of a tsunami. So the news is there is no news - thankfully!

Aurora Borealis

The Aurora Borealis or northern lights have been active this week as the solar wind blows towards the earth. The sun is entering a new active phase after being quiet for a while. Massive ejections of material from the sun called solar flares interact with the earths magnetic field and create a dazzling display of waving lights across the night sky.

tsunami anniversary

One year on from the Japanese tsunami and those dramatic pictures. Its often easy to forget that the disaster is still impacting on peoples lives. The nuclear power plant is now undercontrol but the area may never be inhabited again. Debris still remains piled up and many still missing. fingerss crossed itsquietfor a while.
